Regulating Tourist Bus Access in Venice: LTZ BUS

Venice City Council regulates access of tourist buses within its territory by establishing the Limited Traffic Zone for Buses (ZTL BUS) in order to organize traffic towards Venice and the Historic City, making the extraordinary tourist influx compatible with the ordinary life of the resident citizens.

The ZTL Bus is a limited traffic zone that covers most of the municipal territory of Venice. It was introduced by the Council on March 25, 2002, to promote a culture of environmental protection linked to mobility and to organize traffic towards Venice and the Historic City, making the extraordinary tourist influx compatible with the ordinary life of the resident citizens.

Incentivizing the use of less polluting means, discounted rates are provided for those who use buses with reduced polluting emissions established in the "electric/methane" categories of Euro 4, assimilated to Euro 5, Euro 5 or higher. The passes can be purchased at the Check-in or in the Online Ticket section. The pass costs vary depending on the final destination of the buses.

ZTL BUS TOURIST AREA

The ZTL Bus is an area reserved for buses and covers almost the entire municipal territory of Venice, with free transit allowed only on the Mestre ring road and the connection ramp between it and Marco Polo Airport. For internal circulation within the ZTL, buses are required to purchase an expensive pass, which becomes cheaper for less polluting vehicles (Euro 4, assimilated to Euro 5, Euro 5 or higher).

CHECK-IN FOR TOURIST BUSES

The check-in points are located along the main access roads to the city and are open every day from 6.00 to 20.30 (cashier closing operations at 20.15), except for check-in 3 "FUSINA" open from 7.30 to 21.00 (summer time) and from 7:30 to 19:30 (winter time), and check-in 4 "PETROLI" open 24 hours a day (with AVM staff present from 6.00 to 23.45).

  • "BAZZERA": On the ring road near the Bazzera Nord Service Station for buses coming from the A4 and A23 motorways from Trieste/Udine and A27 from Belluno.
  • "PANORAMA": State Road Romea, near the Panorama Shopping Center, for buses coming from the "Romea" SS309 and "Riviera del Brenta" SS11 directions.
  • "FUSINA": Fusina Terminal for buses coming from the "Romea" SS309 and "Riviera del Brenta" SS11 directions.
  • "PETROLI": Marghera, Via dei Petroli after the descent from the San Giuliano overpass for buses coming from the "Triestina" SS14, "Terraglio" SS13, and "Castellana" SS245 directions. After the Scientific Technological Park, for buses coming from the A4 motorway from Padua and the SP32 "Miranese".

Buses that enter the ZTL BUS area without a pass from 20.15 to 6.00 must regularize their position at check-in 4 "PETROLI."

Regulating your night-time transit

If you enter the ZTL between 23:45 and 6:00, you must send an SMS to 3665795148 with your license plate number to attest to your transit. You'll receive a confirmation SMS with the details of your transit and instructions on how to regulate it. If you don't receive a confirmation SMS, send the message again. You must regularize your transit by 12:00 on the same day at a check-point or by visiting ztlbusvenezia.avmspa.it.

ZTL signage

When driving through the ZTL, you'll encounter different types of vertical signage that are in accordance with the regulations set by the local police. These include the check-in signal that indicates the proximity of a check-in, the prohibition signs that forbid access to the ZTL except for authorized buses, and the direction signs that guide buses to the check-ins.

Parking

There are three paid parking areas reserved for buses in Venice. The first is located in Tronchetto and has 28 spaces available for loading and unloading for free for 30 minutes, with a fee of 2€ every 30 minutes for up to three hours. The second parking area is located in Interparking, just before P.le Roma and a few hundred meters from the historic center of Venice. The third parking area is located in Fusina and has a capacity of 500 parking spaces. It can be reached by the SS 11 Riviera del Brenta or the SS 309 Romea. For more information, call 041.5470160.

ZTL BUS pass

To access the ZTL BUS, tourist buses must obtain a pass from AVM S.p.A., the company authorized by the Venice Municipality to manage the service. The cost of the pass varies according to the bus's final destination (Terraferma/Lido or Venice historic center) and its Euro classification. The pass is valid for 24 hours from the time of entry into the ZTL BUS, except for derogation passes, which are valid for the necessary transfer time within a maximum of three hours. The hotel pass is valid until 7:00 p.m. the day after the pass is issued or the last night of the stay in the case of a multi-day pass.
