Regulating Tourist Bus Access in Siena: LTZ BUS

Visiting the beautiful city of Siena in Tuscany is an experience that many tourists cherish. However, navigating the city can be a challenge, especially for groups arriving by bus. Siena is known for its narrow and winding streets, which make it difficult for large vehicles to move around.

To address this issue, the city has established a Restricted Traffic Zone (ZTL) for tourist buses. In this article, we will explore the details of accessing the ZTL Bus in Siena and the various types of permits available.

Accessing the ZTL Bus in Siena requires a permit, which can be obtained through different means. The permit is necessary for buses that wish to enter the historic center of Siena and make stops at specific locations. There are three types of permits available: P, H, and Online Booking. The P and H permits are available for pre-booking, while the Online Booking permit can be reserved through the official website.

The P permit offers the possibility of stopping at the Fagiolone parking lot and making additional intermediate trips within and outside the city. Groups who request a P permit and use online payment will pay €60 for the entire stay during the high season, while groups who pay directly at the Check Point will pay €75. In the low season, access to the ZTL Bus is free.

The H permit is free and only includes docking for unloading/loading passengers and luggage, without additional intermediate trips to take the group to the center of Siena or out of the city. The H permit is also available for stops at the private courtyards of hotels for the arrival and departure days only, with no other transit allowed. For these purposes, a P permit is required. The software automatically indicates the nearest docking point to the hotel or the private courtyard if the hotel has one.

To obtain either a P or an H permit, the contact person of the hotel must declare the name of the group and the number of people staying at the hotel. This information is required to facilitate subsequent checks on the tourist tax. After confirming the data entered, the hotel contact person must end the process to receive the permit via email, which must be forwarded to the bus operator/travel agency for printing and posting on the dashboard of the bus. The email message will also contain a link for online payment of the P permit booking.

To ensure a smooth and hassle-free visit to Siena, it is essential to request the permit at least one day before the group's arrival. Until the permit is printed, modifications to the booking can be made within the availability limits. However, only the requester, whether it is the agency or the hotel contact person, can change the data related to docking, arrival and departure times, bus license plate, or the number of participants.

It is crucial to print and display the permit on the dashboard of the bus in such a way as to make it visible from the ground to facilitate checks by authorized personnel and avoid fines. The permit must contain the actual data related to the license plate, docking, arrival and departure times of the bus that arrives in Siena. Once the permit is printed and displayed on the dashboard, it cannot be modified.
