Regulating Tourist Bus Access in Bologna: LTZ BUS

Bologna, a city in northern Italy, is known for its rich history, culture, and architecture. Its historic center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and attracts millions of visitors every year. However, due to the high volume of tourists and the need to preserve the city's beauty, the Municipality of Bologna has implemented several regulations regarding the access of tourist buses to the historic center.

In this context, it's essential for tourists and travel operators to be aware of the rules and procedures to avoid fines and ensure a smooth and enjoyable visit. In this text, we will provide a comprehensive guide to the regulations for tourist buses in Bologna, including access points, parking, ticket purchase, and information on the access of buses to hotels in the historic center, the "T" area, and the University area.

Tourist bus access restrictions

From 7 am to 8 pm every day, including holidays, tourist buses cannot access the historic center of Bologna, except for those headed to hotels, under certain conditions.

Tourist bus parking

At the entrance of the historic center, in Piazza XX Settembre, a tourist bus welcome service is available, connected to the public transport network throughout the city. It can be used as a passenger pick-up point. Buses can also pay to park at the structure or other nearby car parks and request additional services (for information and reservations, consult the Autostazione di Bologna website). For the sole purpose of dropping off passengers, tourist buses can use the designated stop in Piazza di Porta San Mamolo (near the Rional Market) for no more than twenty minutes.

Access for tourist buses to restricted traffic zone (ztl) for stops at Piazza Malpighi Tourist buses intending to access the restricted traffic zone (ztl) to reach the stop at Piazza Malpighi (on the east side of the square, in the direction of the center) for a maximum of 5 minutes to pick up or drop off passengers, must pay an access fee of €100 per day. To reach the stop without incurring penalties, buses must follow a specific route:

access from Piazza di Porta S. Isaia, Via S. Isaia, Piazza Malpighi (bus stop) and exit from Via Marconi, Piazza dei Martiri 1943-1945, Via Don Minzoni (to the ring roads) The stop in Piazza Nettuno is never allowed. Tourist buses can circulate in the preferential lanes of Bologna outside the historic center, without the need to communicate their passage, which will not be penalized.

Ticket purchase and registration

Purchasing a ticket allows tourist buses to access the ztl to reach the stop at Piazza Malpighi and pick up or drop off passengers for a maximum of 5 minutes.

The ticket can be purchased online with payment by credit card or online bank transfer. To access the service, you must provide:

  • legal entity details (personal information, company name, VAT number and tax code. Finally, the address information required to invoice the purchase)
  • email address where the order receipt will be sent
  • payment method
  • vehicle license plate
  • date of ticket use

You can purchase more than one ticket in the same order, so you can repeat this operation. Only after entering all the data can you proceed with the payment, and if it is successful, you will receive a summary email containing the receipt of the purchase made. If you have already paid an order, you can modify the data of one or more unused tickets until the day before the use date. The change is made online.

Access for licensed buses, urban shuttles, and school buses

Access for licensed buses from the Metropolitan City of Bologna, issued by the Mobility Agency (Società reti e mobilità - Srm), and urban shuttle buses remains unchanged and can access the ztl for free. School buses that transport students on behalf of the Municipalities of the Metropolitan City of Bologna continue to be included for free in the ztl access system following communication from the Municipalities they operate for.

Access for tourist buses heading to historic center hotels

Regarding telecontrol, hotels communicate the license plates of tourist buses to the Municipality of Bologna. In this way, the license plates are authorized and not fined.
